Spotify expands audiobook features internationally

Published 15.4.2026

Spotify has announced a suite of major updates today, headlined by the launch of physical book sales in the United States and United Kingdom.

The audio streaming giant is doubling down on its "Audiobooks in Premium" initiative, which has seen its catalog swell from 150,000 to over 700,000 titles in just over two years. With the service now live in 22 markets, Spotify is positioning itself as a central hub for the entire literary ecosystem, leveraging its massive global reach to connect listeners with authors.

A move Into physical retail

The most significant shift in the company’s strategy is a new partnership with Bookshop.org, allowing users to purchase physical copies of books directly through the Spotify app. The feature aims to capitalize on the moment of discovery, moving the user from a digital stream to a physical bookshelf.

  • Platform Rollout: Android users in the U.S. and U.K. can access the storefront starting today, with iOS compatibility expected next week.

  • Supporting Local: By partnering with Bookshop.org, Spotify’s foray into e-commerce will funnel support to independent bookstores.

"These updates demonstrate our continued ambition to make reading fit into modern life," said Owen Smith, Spotify’s Global Head of Audiobooks. "Whether it’s discovering a book the same way you’d find a song... or using Page Match to switch to a physical copy at home, we’re making it easier for people to engage with books."

Tech-driven "Page Match" goes global

A cornerstone of this expansion is the growth of Page Match, a feature that allows users to sync their progress between an audiobook and its printed or e-book counterpart.

The tool is expanding to more than 30 additional languages, including French, German, and Swedish. Early data suggests the feature is a significant driver of engagement; Spotify reports that users who utilize Page Match stream an average of 55% more audiobook hours each week than those who do not. Notably, 62% of books engaged via Page Match were titles the users had never previously streamed, suggesting the tool is a powerful engine for new discovery.

Enhanced Features for Android and International Markets

The update also brings parity to the user experience across devices and borders:

  • Audiobook Recaps: Now available on Android, this feature provides short audio summaries of the story so far, helping listeners jump back into complex narratives after a break.

  • New Charts: Germany will see the introduction of Audiobook Charts, ranking titles by listening behavior. Meanwhile, the U.S. and U.K. will receive a dedicated Kids and Family chart to help parents navigate the growing catalog.
